Water Rights

The Griffin Hay Farm has three Creeks that run through the property, Grape Creek, Macey Creek and Spring Creek.  These creeks are fed through snow melt from the Sangre de Cristo mountain range.  

The farm has 5 named and deeded water rights, two from Macey Creek and three from Spring Creek.  The water right is based on a “Priority” system based on the date of each individual water right.  When the Water Right enters into “Priority”, then the farm has the right to divert a certain amount of water (measured in Cubic Feet per Second) out of the creek and onto the farm property.

The diverted water is then sent down a series of ditches and pipes developed by the farm to distribute the water onto the fields through a “Flood Irrigation” process.

The water usually comes off the mountains in early May and runs for until we are no longer in “Priority”, or until we no longer need any more water.
